Many of you have asked what exactly I'm going to be doing in South Africa. You ask if it's a mission trip?, if it's a vacation?, if it's a time for me to clear my head and get away from science... But none of you has asked if it has anything to do social equality.... if it has anything to do with post-apartheid Africa... if it has anything to do with the AIDS pandemic and the fact that millions are suffering from the malady. It's not just a study abroad. It's not just a 3 week bout in a foreign land to discover some cultural differences... It's a time to try to let ourselves open our eyes to something completely obscure and unobstructed... To live alongside a family plagued by the atrocities of AIDS and oppression and be willing to listen rather than speak.
The following submissions will be thoughts and vignettes detailing my experiences in South Africa. Read them with a heavy heart and knowledge that all are true and intended to bring about a greater understanding of South Africa.

A group of students from the University of Minnesota endure and 18+ hour flight for an unforgettable experience in Cape Town, South Africa. Apart from experiencing the culture and touring, we will be taking a class called Cross-Cultural Leadership Contexts of the AIDS Pandemic.
